Marty Munoz and Olympia Kabobel are the caretakers of That Tiny Farm in LA, a garden in a private residence in El Sereno Hills that focuses on creating a space where edible crops thrive and earthwise practices such as composting and bee-keeping continue the circle of maintaining an eco-responsible space for long-term growth. Marty notes about the garden:

"We have been working on this garden for three years. The previous owners considered this place their starter farm and planted a handful of trees and raised chickens. They handed it off to us in hopes we would continue to grow this place even more.

We want to display gardening in an urban environment with a focus on agricultural diversity and building native habitat. We have roughly 60 native plants, 60 fruiting trees, with berries and vegetables filling in the gaps. We have also added two beehives this past year."

The El Sereno Community Garden has been serving the community since 2002. Per their website, “As part of the LA Community Garden Council, we are committed to fostering sustainable urban agriculture and promoting environmental stewardship.”

Full of nooks and crannies of shade and respite, this garden is open to the public on Saturday mornings, offering over 50 plots for community use, as well as opportunities to volunteer and just get your hands into the earth. The individual plots may contain anything from seasonal chile peppers to bursts of color from flowers such as marigolds, making the space a draw for pollinators.

In addition to the plants grown and the community nurtured, it has also served as a community resource, distributing food on Wednesday mornings recently, while many residents in the community have needed additional food resources and outreach.

Congratulations El Sereno Residents!

According to Francisco:

According to Francisco:

“We began our landscape renovation in 2015 as a simple turf removal project. Our front and back yards once featured a conventional lawn, but we wanted to replace it with a drought-tolerant landscape with more appeal. We focused on California native plants—not only for their low water needs but also for the biodiversity they support, from native bees to butterflies and birds...

This garden represents what is possible with time and dedication. From a standard, unnuanced space to a lush, low-water oasis featuring California native plants such as Bladderpods, Hummingbird Sage, the stunning Louis Hamilton Desert Mallow, and the very regional Engelmann Oak, the garden gives those in the community a model for how we can envision differently.

This beautiful garden has a front-facing simple native garden that can be enjoyed by the community and a multi-tiered back space that Francisco, a landscape designer, and David, a math teacher, have been working on for approximately ten years. This garden was, in part, crafted utilizing turf removal rebates to reduce water usage. The garden was open to the public on this year's El Sereno Garden tour.

...What began with small starter plants has, ten years later, grown into a vibrant landscape showcasing many mature native plant species. We also kept a portion of a rose garden in the front yard, for curb appeal. Today, we use far less water and get more enjoyment as our garden continues to evolve and flourish.”
